Frontier Style: Season's Greetings

These last few weeks of the year are rife with nostalgia. Over on Into The Wild we have sought out the best of 2011 backpacking, reading and quizzing. Here on Frontier Style it’s time for a look back at the best seasonal trends 2011 has given us.

Playsuits are something of a yoyo trend: one season they’re in and the next they’re out. The Spring of 2011 saw a jumpsuit revival. Urban Outfitters offer a number of different and stylish jumpsuits which range from girly to grunge. The Kimchi & Blue Button Front Playsuit is perfectly versatile; the baggy, slouchy fit makes it comfy and the metal buttons down the front, turn-ups and pockets at the hip make it a great fashion choice too.

Canvas espadrilles have always been a popular choice in hotter climates such as France, Spain and Latin America. However, this summer saw a new home for the espadrille when Toms hit the shelves at Office. With loads of styles to choose from and the added bonuses of comfort and practicality, Toms were seen gracing the feet of what seemed like half the people in the streets of London. The University espadrille grey canvas shoes have a great nautical twist, and when you buy a pair for £36.99 Toms gives a pair of shoes to a child in need. Espadrilles would also be great to take along with you on a frontier project, as our volunteers spend so much time on the beach.

Every season trends evolve, and every season two trends merge. Autumn 2011 was no exception, as it saw the birth of the sheer maxi dress. Miss Selfridge’s Sheer Vest Maxi Dress in black is a sexy answer to formal wear. The burnt orange version, reminiscent of autumnal leave, paired with nude pumps would be a lovely look at the most scenic time of the year.

The women’s tuxedo made its comeback this winter, and its all thanks to designers like Tom Ford and the re-rise of 1970s fashion. The Fearne Cotton Longline Tuxedo Jacket at Very is a super way to add a touch of androgyny to an outfit. The design is such that you can dress it up or down and the single button fastening transforms the jacket from severe to understated. At £59.99, the tuxedo jacket makes for a great investment this Christmas.
